Bebop Spoken There

Newcastle Community Green Festival - Leazes Park.

Despite the fact that it was a degree or ten below the norm for the time of year Leazes Park was awash with folk intent on enjoying the music (2 stages 6 bands each), the beer (Jarrow Bitter for the discerning - lager for the rest), the food (vegan, veggie, Turkish, Italian - even English!), the many stalls ranging from Yoga/meditation to baubles, bangles and beads as well as a host of second hand books going from Karl Marx to Groucho Marx. Yes this is quite an event - I missed Saturday but today was something else.
Down by the Lakeside a guitar duo backed by bass and drums appealed to the radical audience with a few protest songs that attacked everyone (except the Green Party - surprise! surprise!) Nevertheless, whether or not you agreed with the sentiments their lyrics were amusing.
Next up was Hannabiell and Midnight Blue. Amazing how this band has developed in such a short space of time and they gave a barnstorming performance. You just had to dance to the pulsating rhythms they pounded out - even I found myself doing a little strutting! And that bass trombone - wow!
The great lady sniffed, then smiled and said - "I think there's some herbal essence being smoked out there..." The way some of the dancers were gyrating she may have been right!
So much going on it was unbelievable and unfortunately, I only caught the tail end of a set by Jen Stevens and the Hiccups. This was my loss. Singing over her own piano chording and backed by the Hiccups who belied their name Jen did as fine a version of Moondance as you're going to hear this side of Morrison's van.
I said to myself and to all within earshot - "Follow that!"
Not many could but Nick Pride and The Pimptones aren't just anybody!
They're as cool as their Brooks Brother's image and in no time at all they were firing on all cylinders. When singer Susan came on stage they went into overdrive. This girl knows her way around a songsheet and looks good too!
Not forgetting the horn section
There were other bands I heard but these were the ones that grabbed me.
Lance.
