The Honey Bop Trio @ Hoochie Coochie

Hannah Rickard (vcl/gtr/vln); David Patten (gtr); Johnny Kavanagh (bs).
(Review by Lance).
Carrying on from The Sage's Americana weekend The Honeybop Trio - the name comes from a Wanda Jackson song - were themselves one of the outdoor stage attractions at that event, gave a performance that went from Country to Western Swing to Rockabilly to Rock 'n Roll with perhaps just a hint of jazz along the way.
Well more than a hint as Rickard has the kind of voice that adjusts to the genre and has been heard in jazz situations in the past.

Tonight, however, she was a cowgirl in Amarillo bemoaning the fact that she lost her lover to A Jukebox and a Pinball Machine. Meet Me At The Station (a Rickard original), Cash and Carter's Big Mouthed Woman and a  Long Legged Guitar Pickin' Man - a vocal duet with Rickard and Patten - Kavanagh's Common Country Boy, some Western Swing on It's a Sin to Tell a Lie, which also had Rickard on violin, and Hank Williams' Lovesick Blues were just some of the outstanding moments of the first set.
Warren spun a great track by Freddy Cole - Brother Where Are You? - during the interval which paved the way nicely for the second set (as did a bottle of London Pride!).
Johnny Lives in a Hole in the Ground, Buddy Holly's I Guess it Doesn't Matter Any More, Dolly's Jolene, I'm Your Voodoo Doll, A Little Bit Is All I Need and. of course, Honey Bop made for a rockier, rollier set that had a few dancers struttin'.
Great singer,  excellent lead guitar and solid bass slapper, the Honey Bop Trio can be heard again this weekend at the Gateshead Flower Show.
Next week is Pete Gilligan's Jazz Jam.
Lance.
