CD Review: The Fred Hughes Trio - Matrix

Great piano playing, great trio. If I'd heard this live at a gig in Washington DC or even in the UK's Washington CD (County Durham) I'd have been the first in line to buy the CD after what, I'm sure, would have been a great concert.
Classics by Brubeck. Corea, Evans, Hancock, Silver alongside I Got Rhythm, Bach's Two-Part Invention, No. 4 and Tchaikovsky's Andante Cantabile. This latter piece is from Peter Ilyich T's Fifth Symphony and was also recorded by various vocalists, including Sinatra and Al Bowlly as Moon Love. Perhaps Tchaikovsky was the first great tunesmith!
Yes, an essential purchase after the gig.
However, not having heard this at a gig, the thought arises, I've got all this stuff by the originators: Brubeck, Corea etc. Louissier did the Bach stuff and as fine a pianist as Hughes is I doubt if he'd pull me away from the originals.
Also, piano trios abound. Every city in the world probably has more than one. In the North-East of England, and indeed, in most parts of the UK, we have piano trios to take on the world - this Thursday [January 12] at The Globe there is one such gig to back-up my claim.*
An excellent disc that would have benefited from less obvious material but, having said that, It's well worth checking out.
